During extreme cold events, you may hear a loud boom and feel that you experienced an earthquake. However, this event was more likely a cryoseism, also known an ice quake or a frost quake.
As the cold weather continues to chill New Hampshire, some of you may have noticed some strange noises coming from your house.
It could have been as frost quake CHICAGO (CBS) -- We've been hearing about frost quakes across Chicago Monday – a loud bang, a jolt, shaking ground, something that seems like a mini-earthquake.
Missouri isn’t alone. Frost quakes were reported last month in Canada and in several other states – Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin.
Frost quakes were also reported during the polar vortex cold snap at the end of January 2019 – during which temperatures got much colder than they will be at any point during this cold snap.
So what was it that sent folks searching for the source of the rattling, explosion-type noise? Our best guess is that it was a frost quake.
