A 74-year-old woman tried to scratch her way out of a bedroom closet where she hid to escape a Kentucky tornado, but was found dead three days later, authorities say.

Many people take shelter in closets during tornadoes, but probably not ones that are armored. More than 600 people have already bought into the idea of a custom-fit, reinforced closet to protect them.

When the tornado passed, the family emerged from the closet to find the dream home they built themselves was gone.

All that's left of their home is a small closet. It was the only one in their home and where they rode out the storm with their 7-year-old grandson. "He was so scared," Karima said.

Heather Prince said she was hiding in a closet with her two children as a tornado ripped through their home, destroying most of their belongings.

"It seems counterproductive to run into the hail and the tornado weather to get to your shelter," said Magiera. Prices for an Armored Closet start at just under $4,000.

Tanner says it's better to build a safe room in a closet or interior area rather than designing a completely tornado-proof home. "It's not cost-effective and it will be rather ugly," he says.
