A wooden toll bridge was built across the Occoquan River in 1795. By the time a flood washed it away a dozen years later, it had become such a landmark that the plantation and area on the south bank had taken the name Woodbridge. We don’t have a picture of that structure, but we do have this image of the neighboring highway and railroad bridges in about 1938.
